Driving User-Centered Strategy and Design at LEGO Ideas

LEGO Ideas is a platform where Adult Fans Of LEGO (AFOLs) can submit their own designs for potential LEGO sets. These designs are voted on by the community, and those with enough support can become official LEGO products. As Lead Designer and part of the leadership trio, I helped set the direction and focus for a 20-person team of developers and designers. I played a key role in shaping the product’s strategy by conducting extensive research, including setting up customer panels, attending LEGO events and fairs, and gathering insights from our target group. I created transparency into behaviors and segments on the platform, which led to clear focus areas and actionable user-centric tasks for the team. This research directly informed backlog planning and ensured user input was at the heart of development. Additionally, I tracked progress through quarterly OKRs to measure the success of our initiatives.

Additionally, I tracked progress through quarterly OKRs to measure the success of our initiatives.

Alongside my design team of three, we analyzed feedback from the website, surveys, interviews, and prototype tests. This collaborative effort identified key focus areas to guide our long-term product development, addressing pain points like "Fairness," equal opportunities for less tech-savvy builders, and fostering stronger relationships between supporters and creators. These insights helped shape our user-centric OKRs, allowing us to track progress and ensure the focus areas were effectively met.
To guide our product development, I set up user panels segmented into creators, supporters, and browsers. I implemented filters within each segment to dive deeper into user motivations and purchasing behaviors, helping us identify the right people for specific insights. This approach ensured we gathered targeted feedback to inform the right ideas and refine our strategy.
